Definition of rhetoric? (think back to Professor Villanuava)

Visual rhetoric--the study of persuasion and communication via visual images and the relationships between images and texts.

Visual rhetoric -- recent development of a theoretical framework describing how visual images communicate, as opposed to aural or verbal messages.

Visual rhetoric -- different from visual culture or graphic design -- emphasizes images as rational expressions of cultural meaning, as opposed to mere aesthetic consideration.

Visual rhetoric analyzes artifacts like charts, paintings, graphs, web pages, advertisements, movies, architecture, newspapers, photographs, clothing, catalogs, CD covers, brochures, and more. Visual rhetoric attempts to discover the available means of persuasion that visual texts draw on.
