Course Description

This course is constructed to help you expand your abilities to combine visual and textual knowledge with an understanding of navigation, information artchitecure, and the common conventions of the web. In this course we will be working toward developing and designing web sites that thoughtfully engage audiences through both their aesthetic and technological approach. This is not a course solely focused on sortware or programming, however we will spend a good deal of time familiarizing ourselves with the basic workings of HTML, XHTML, CSS, Photoshop and Dreamweaver. We will also learn about web standards, usability, and how to manage large-scale client-based projects.

Policies

Academic Honesty: All students are expected to act in accordance with the WSU policies on Academic Honesty found in the Student Handbook. These policies will be discussed in class and students will be asked to acknowledge that discussion and a basic understanding of the policies. Attendance: This is a 400-level course and I expect you to participate like 400-level students. Given the nature of the class and the huge amount of group work we will be doing, ONE absence is permitted. After that, your participation grade will suffer. If you need to miss more than this, please come talk to me.

Late work: Acceptance of late work is unusual and must be discussed in conference with the teacher. Late work will receive a lowered grade if turned in within one week of the original due date. Work turned in later than one week past the original due date will be given an automatic grade of F.

Evaluation:

10% Class Portfolio (Grade factored evenly between presentation, letter, and website)

20% Individual Project (Grade factored evenly between presentation, letter, and website)

60% Final Project (Concept Presentations 10%, Site Map and Rational 5%, Usability Test 5%, Final Presentation 10%, Final Packet 30%)

10% Participation (includes in-class assignments, reading responses, engagement in class discussions, keeping up with readings, turning in assignments on time, participation in group work, and absences. You are allowed one absence during the semester. YOU WILL LOSE 100 POINTS FOR EACH ABSENCE BEYOND ONE. No, I'm not kidding. Yes, I will do this.
