October 2012

Kathleen Judd was awarded a grant from the Auvil Foundation at WSU. Way to go Kathleen! She will use these funds to continue her work on ancient dogs from the American Southwest and present these data at the meeting of the Society for American Archaeology next spring.

April 2012

It's been a great month for the Kemp Lab...lots to celebrate:

Cara Monroe was awarded a grant from the Wenner-Gren foundation. Congratulations Cara! She will use this grant to conduct her PhD thesis research.

Justin Teisberg successfully defended his PhD thesis. Congratulations Dr. Teisberg!

Misa Winters successfully defended her Master's thesis. Way to go Misa!

Fernando Villanea was awarded a grant from the Elling Endowment (School of Biological Sciences). Congratulations to Fernando! He will use the award to present at the upcoming Evolution Ottawa (1st Joint Congress on Evolutionary Biology)

Brad Newbold was awarded the Nicholas Michael Scoales Scholarship in Archaeology from the Department of Anthropology. Congrats to Brad!

Brian Kemp received the Early Career Faculty Award from the College of Sciences. Also, check out this short video documentary put together by Becky Phillips at WSU about research in the Kemp Lab.

 

December 5th, 2011

Brian Kemp was given a Berry Family CLA Faculty Excellence Fellows award. This money will allow the Kemp lab to continue collaborative efforts with their colleagues in Mexico during the next few years.

September 20th, 2011

Brian Kemp and co-PI Jodi Barta were awarded a grant from the National Institute of Justice. Thanks to Cara Monroe for all the help with writing the grant and getting it submitted. This grant will keep the lights on in the Kemp Lab until the end of summer 2013!

August 31st, 2011

Brian Kemp co-authored an article with Bill Lipe and R.G. Matson that appears in Southwestern Lore. This paper highlights some of the genetic work the Kemp lab has been conducting with the material from Turkey Pen Ruins, a site located in Southeastern Utah. The paper can be viewed under publications.

It all started with an e-mail from Susan Crockford who asked a "goosey" sort of question...

Our new article on molecular species identification of goose remains from Adak Island is out in the Canadian Journal of Zoology. The project was conceived by Susan Crockford at Pacific ID and lead by Bryan Wilson when he was an undergraduate in the UBM program at WSU.

Our new paper on the practice of cloning in ancient DNA studies is out in PLoS One, which can be obtained by following this link. It can also be found under publications. The story was picked up by Science Daily.

Note that the lead author "Misa Winters" is Sarah Runnells...she is getting married next month, taking her husband's last name and changing her first name. Misa conducted this rearch as an undergraduate in the UBM program at WSU.

Fernando Villanea was awarded a grant from the Elling Endowment (School of Biological Sciences). Congratulations to Fernando! He will use the award to spend most of the summer at Stanford University.

FEBRUARY 16th, 2011

Fernando Villanea was awarded a William S. Pollitzer Student Travel Award. Congratulations to Fernando! He will use the $500 award for travel to the upcoming AAPA meeting in Minneapolis.

NOVEMBER 10th, 2010

Brian Kemp and Tad Schurr's review paper on molecular variation in the Americas has been published as a chapter in Ben Auerbach's (editor) Biological and Archaeological Variation in the New World. A pdf version of Kemp and Schurr 2010 can be found under publications.

The book can be purchased for the reasonable price of $35 at the Center for Archaeological Investigations the Southern Illinois University.

OCTOBER 5th, 2010

Kelli Flanigan was awarded an Auvil fellowship. She will use these funds to attend and present at the 2011 Society for American Archaeology Meeting in Sacramento, CA. Congratulations to Kelli! See the WSU news article about Kelli's award and the others given to WSU undergrad.

APRIL 6th, 2010

Kyle Bocinsky was awarded an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship. Way to go Kyle!

P. S. Stefani Crabtree, another archaeology graduate student, was also award an NSF-GRF. Way to go Stefani!

Jodi Barta and colleagues' discovery of an individual of East Asian maternal ancestry in ancient Roman Cemetery was covered in The Independent.

The story has even been translated into Greek!
