We walked along the ghats, where it was difficult to capture a reverent mood as we were pestered by vendors for whom we were the only potential customers. I bought a very nice set of hand-carved and painted Hindu gods for about $6.00.

These Brahmin priests take the ashes brought to them by bereaved survivors and knead them into balls with Ganges water which are then thrown into the river, bringing merit to the deceased spirit comparable to that of being cremated on the "burning ghats" themselves.
