About the Course

Class Information:

Course Objectives:

The purpose of this course is to inform you of the sexual choices you have and to aid you with planning a safe and responsible sex life. The core of the course analyzes sexual decision making and the factors that should be considered in those decisions. Risk factors related to AIDS and other STDs will be presented and analyzed. The role played by alcohol and other drugs in sexual behavior will be examined and procedures for minimizing their impact will be discussed. The major options of abstinence, monogamy, or always using a condom will be considered in detail.

Through active participation in the course you should acquire an understanding of the basic properties of AIDS and other Sexually transmitted diseases, their transmission and treatment, and master an important set of ideas and skills related to self-management and sexual decision making. In addition, you should comprehend the factors involved in risk assessment and the role such variables as alcohol and drugs play in sexual assault, unprotected sex, and other unwanted consequences. Finally, it is hoped that after the course, you will make some or all of the following changes to your behavior: 1) adopt the low risk or no-risk behaviors described in class; 2) moderate alcohol and drug use in connection with sexual experiences and decision making; 3) use self-management skills to reduce the risk of acquiring HIV and other STDs; 4) adopt and implement an Individual Action Plan related to your sexual choices; 5) regularly assess and analyze personal and situational risk factors; 6) be appropriately assertive when communication with current or potential partners; 7) discuss prior sexual history and condom use with partners or prospective partners; and 8) acquire and properly use condoms.
