1. You'll want to use the MLA Bibliography, since it's the gold standard for finding materials in American literature. To find it, go to this page:

2. Click on Databases A to Z. Warning: "Quick Search" and the other links on that page will give you a "not found" message for MLA; they don't work. Doing a "Subject" search under Humanities won't give you the MLA database, either. The "Cross search" sometimes works and sometimes doesn't; right now, it will bring up a "Not Found" link for MLA. Stick with the Databases A to Z link.
3. Type in MLA. This will take you to MLA at Ebsco.You can also get to Project Muse, JStor, and Proquest from this menu. The library has removed the old drop-down menus.

American Indian Quarterly. Essential for Native American literature.
American Literary History. Important journal that focuses on theoretical approaches to American literature. Long review essays assess current books in the field.
American Literary Realism. Publishes articles, reviews and bibliographies; essential for the period 1870-1910. Issues prior to 2008 are in Holland/Terrell Library; after 2008, they're online through Project Muse.
American Literary Scholarship. An essential reference, this annual from American Literature reviews the previous year's work in literary criticism of American literature.
American Literature.* Major journal in the field;
American Quarterly. Journal of the American Studies Association; covers American critical race studies, political and popular culture, and history, primarily 20th century.
American Studies. Interdisciplinary journal focusing on American literature and culture.
American Transcendental Quarterly. Good source for American Renaissance writers.Arizona Quarterly. Theoretically-oriented articles on 19th and 20th-century American literature.
Colby Library Quarterly. Also known as Colby Quarterly, this journal published many articles on New England writers, especially Sarah Orne Jewett. Stopped publishing in 2003, but back issues are available (free) through Digital Commons..
College English. This publication from NCTE (National Council of Teachers in English) focuses primarily on issues of rhetoric, writing, and pedagogy, but some American writers are covered.
Critical Inquiry. Excellent theoretical journal.
Early American Literature. This journal focuses on materials before 1820.
Edith Wharton Review. High-quality articles and reviews on Edith Wharton. Index available.
ELH: English Literary History. Despite its name, this Johns Hopkins-based journal publishes theoretical and historical work on American literature, too.

ESQ: A Journal of the American Renaissance. Based at Washington State University, this journal focuses on all aspects of romanticism from the beginnings to mid-century writers. Available through Project Muse.

Revue Francaise d'Etudes Americaines
Signs: A Journal of Women in Culture and Society. This women's studies journal has published significant articles on women and literature, although that is not its focus.
South Atlantic Review
Southern Literary Journal. Southern writers, including some regionalist writers.
Southern Quarterly
Studies in American Fiction. This highly selective journal from Northeastern University publishes articles on all areas of American literature.
