GLOBAL SERVICE
In July of 2009, members of PNW CKI will be embarking on our third annual Global Service trip to Panama City, "Bringing Education to Arraijan." We will be traveling to Panama to help the local Kiwanis and CKI clubs construct a 3-room school house in the Arraijan district.
The impoverished district of Arraijan is located about an hour outside of Panama City. Although it is within such close proximity to a booming city, this area has been completely neglected and ignored in relation to educational programs or facilities. As of now, the government is working to replace the dirt roads leading to these communities, with paved roads. The area is solely home to Native Panamanians.
This past summer, we were awarded a Tomorrow Fund Grant and Kiwanis Foundation Grant to help with the material costs for building the facility. We will continue to apply for grants and work on fundraising ideas for the remaining costs.
Our District Administrators, Tom and Lori Bryant, will be accompanying us on this trip. In addition, Kiwanis International Vice-President, Sylvester Neal is very interested in participating. We are opening it up to other Kiwanis members as well so if you know anyone interested, please direct them towards Amy Blauman (blaumaaa@plu.edu).
Lastly, there will be a second application going out after fall conference for another 5-10 positions that will be open for those who do not want to apply right now.
Thanks and I hope to hear back from many of you!
