Pope Joan The character Pope Joan a legendary female who is thought to have disguised herself as a man and served as Pope of the Roman Catholic Church between 854 and 856. Joan, who was English, disguised herself as a man and fled to Athens to study with her lover when she was 12. After her lover, a Benedictine monk, died, she became a priest, then a cardinal soon after. She succeeded Pope Leo IV as Pope, and had a new lover, a cardinal. She became pregnant, and the people found out that she was a woman, stoning her to death. |
