WEEK 15

  1. The last week,
    the
    last play,
    the
    last quiz,
    and the
    last exam.

  2. Quiz this Monday and Exam #4 on Friday.

  3. With last week's play, we could think of Francis as a kind of amateur anthropologist. With this week's play, the character of Colin Turnbull is a professional anthropologist. The play is an adaptation of the book entitled, The Mountain People written by the real Colin Turbull. Everything dramatized in the play really happened--all characters and events in the play pivot around Turnbull's actual anthropological study and the names, so to speak, have not been changed to protect the innocent!

  4. By all means take a look at the pictures of some of the real people dramatized in the play. The more you keep in mind that everything in the play really happened, the more you'll appreciate the dramatic impact and cross cultural ramifications of the piece. Why exactly is this play "cross cultural?" The answer is not as simple as the obvious fact that there is an anthropologist studying a foreign culture. Even if anthropologist Turnbull was not even included as a character in the play, the Ik as a people are the product of grotesque cross cultural dynamics.

  5. Two quizzes this week. On Monday there will be quiz on The Ik, and on Wednesday there will be a quiz on The Lottery. Shirley Jackson's famous short story will help clarify and amplify the shocking theme of The Ik.

  6. As usual, the best way to learn the most about a particular play is to take a look at the discussion questions before the actual class discussion. Here's a quick way to get to THIS WEEK'S QUESTIONS. Also included in this week's discussion questions are some excerpts from The Mountian People, the original study that the play is based upon.

  7. Several of you have already talked to me about extra credit possibilities. Remember that one option for an extra credit paper is to compare and contrast a couple of our CROSS CULTURAL SIMULATIONS. For lots of other suggestions, see EXTRA CREDIT POSSIBILITIES. In addition to the really intriguing projects listed directly on this page, you can also find many many more by clicking on the Extra-Credit WEBBANK.

  8. The best way to figure out whether or not you need extra credit is by checking the GRADEBOOK.

    posted online.

  9. Have a great 15th week of class!
