Our research deals with the structure and function of the phloem and related areas. The complexity of the phloem tissue and the difficulties to access it for cell biological investigations has left us with major problems to understand even its basic functions such as the mode of translocation and allocation of assimilates.  This lack of knowledge however, has a major impact on our general understanding of plant function, since the phloem allocates almost all assimilates and its tube system is also employed for long distance signaling.
