Thanks to Professor Peter Knupfer of Michigan State University for the following
information on the 1850 page as well as suggested information and links on
other pages, especially the 1840 page: "
The various laws making up the Compromise of 1850 did not admit Texas to the
Union (Texas entered in 1845). It admitted free California; permitted
organization of Utah and New Mexico territories without restriction of slavery
until they applied for statehood; prohibited the public sale of slaves in the
District of Columbia; included the new Fugitive Slave Act; and federalized
Texas's pre-annexation debt in exchange for Texas's relinquishment of its substantial
territorial claims upon New Mexico Territory." 8/25/04
