You are cordially invited to the unveiling of an Ohio Bicentennial Plaque commemorating well-known American author William Dean Howells and his boyhood in Hamilton, Ohio.

The Ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2003, at Monument Park in downtown Hamilton. Monument Park is adjacent to the Butler County Soldiers, Sailors, and Pioneers Monument on the bank of the Great Miami River. This is also the site of the first stop on the just-opened William Dean Howells "A Boy's Town Tour." Howells' later-life book "A Boy's Town" in which he gives a full description of his boyhood days in Hamilton of the 1840s provides the basis of the tour.

Information on accommodations and the luncheon. Reservations for the luncheon must be made by May 5, 2003.

The program will include an appearance by "William Dean Howells" and will include Bicentennial dignitaries, greetings from the Mayor of Hamilton, and music by the Oxford Community Band. The Northern Kentucky Department of Literature and Language has commissioned a poster in honor of the event. We believe that you and your students may also be interested in attending and learning more about the "Dean of American Letters." We have posters available for your staff and students if they would be helpful for you in publicizing this event.
