Welcome to the Pullman Parks Learning Module. This site is a project of The American Studies Summer Institute Cultures and Environments seminar at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington. The goal of this site is to begin to analyze and critique interactions between what we conceive of as "culture" and "nature." The following web pages are designed to guide the user through a brief compartive analysis of two local parks. In this analysis, notions of culture and nature and how they interact are examined as they are reflected in the creation of "natural spaces" and the kinds of experiences they encompass. The user of this module is encouraged to think critically about the following questions:
- Why are "natural spaces," such as public parks, created?
- What kinds of stories are being told about culture and nature by such spaces?
- Who are these spaces created for? Who are they created by?
- What kinds of experiences are parks and natural spaces created for?
- What kinds of values are reflected by these spaces? Whose values are they?
The module user is encouraged to follow the arrows through each page, beginning with the blue arrow at the bottom of this page. Following the park analyses are pages containing various tools to guide the user's own analysis of culture and nature, including options for interactive assignments.
