Layout Assignment
Assignment:
Use
your knowledge of typography, color theory, and layout (CARP)
principals to create the layout for the first issue of your journal.
Keep in mind that you will include your use of basic design principals
(color, typography, contrast, repetition, alignment, proximity) in the
final report of your project at the end of the semester.
Layout: You must you Adobe
InDesign to create your inside pages. The design of your
journal is optional and should be based on your experience, or the
experience of your layout editor. Make sure to include a forward,
acknowledgements page, table of contents, page numbers, and an
editorial page. You might also include a basic title page and a
contributor's page, but the rest is up to you.
You
will also include snapshots of the layout in your final report and your
exhibit at the end of the semester.
Size: You have some
flexibility here, but you will want to create a book that falls between
6x9 and 8.5x11 inches. Discuss the size of the your book with your
editorial team and make sure that the inside pages match the length and
width of your cover.
Inside pages: You
will notice that I've added links to the schedule with information on
front matter, back matter, and designing inside pages. Make sure you
understand the importance of each and every part of your book. You will
want to pay attention, for instance, to the table of contents and how a
good table of contents can help readers navigate through the pages of a
book or magazine.
Page Numbers: Because journals in this class are
saddle-stitched you will want to ensure you keep your book to 48 pages
or less. Otherwise, you will have a difficult time with the binding.
You will also want to consider your page count. You don't want blank
pages in your book so make sure your page count is divisible by 4
(always keep in mind you print 4 pages per sheet of paper).
Layout/Border: I
will pay particular attention to the layout of your book, which
includes the border. Please make sure that the text doesn't come to
close to the edge of the book. This creates an eyesore and doesn't
illustrate your knowledge of layout.
Note to the Copy Editor: Please keep
in mind that part of your group's final grade is based on the
congruence of your journal, which includes the design and overall
layout. Therefore, you should lend an eye in the development and
overall editing of this assignment.
