	• 1862, Clerk at the Paymaster’s Office • 1865. 1 January. Becomes a clerk at the Bureau of Indian Affairs, a post he enjoys. • Fired in May because Secretary of the Interior James Harlan sees Leaves of Grass in Whitman’s desk drawer and denounces it as  immoral.
