Marine Invertebrate Communities

The purpose of this two-credit course is to provide an introduction to the natural history of invertebrate animals found in shoreline and near-shore marine habitats, to the ecological interactions in marine invertebrate communities, and to the process of scientific investigation in marine ecology. We will visit the full range of marine habitats in the area, including the rocky subtidal, rocky intertidal, mudflats, near-shore pelagic, and estuarine. Activities include a mix of field collections, laboratory study, and field ecological investigations of marine invertebrate organisms and communities.

The two-week field and lab course will be held at Friday Harbor Labs, San Juan Islands, Washington, for an 8-day period, and an additional 6 days on campus at WSU for the completion and presentation of individual projects (approximately May 6-20, 2007).
