What is an Earthquake?

-shaking of the earth caused by massive release of elastic energy when faults slip.

Earthquake Terminology:

-Focus is the origin of the earthquake

-Epicenter is the point on the land surface above the focus

Types of Waves:

-P waves are “Primary”, first to arrive, push pull

-S waves are “Secondary, shear waves –can’t travel through fluid

-L waves travel along the surface, last to arrive
