PART II: ESSAY (20 points)

DIRECTIONS:
Below is the essay question for the second Midterm. You may NOT use any notes or outlines during the exam. We will provide the paper on which to write. See the STUDY GUIDE and your text (pp. 17-23), which should be helpful in organizing and thinking about your essay.

1) Choose and discuss ONE of the following works as it relates to the question below. First, be able to identify the work (filling in the blanks - title, artist (if known), culture/period, sub-period or country - 4 points). Spelling will count - if it's spelled wrong, it is wrong!

21-2, CHINA/Yuan; Autumn Colors . . . by Zhao Mengfu
19-8 and 19-9 BAROQUE/Italian, Ecstasy of St. Theresa by Bernini

2) Then, in a well-written and well-organized essay, discuss the work chosen in terms of the following statement:

This work grew out of the political, economic, and/or social events of its time in some way. These events, in turn, affected its style, subject matter, or both.

Your discussion should consider the following:

1) the particular political, economic, or social circumstances in which the work was created (4 points)

2) how or in what ways the above circumstances affected the SUBJECT/MESSAGE of the work and/or its STYLE (how the work looks, its formal elements, its media). (12 points)

Remember to NOTE THE POINT VALUES.
