PART I: SLIDE IDENTIFICATION (60 points)
Below are 35 works from the text. 15 of these will be on the ID part of the midterm, and TWO will be in the essay part. Know: title; style period and country or city; artist/architect (see below). Also, be able to answer questions regarding medium/technique; subject/meaning; function/purpose; notable style characteristics; relevant vocabulary and terms (see Word List 3); reasons for importance in the history of art. All of these will be incorporated into the exam. Each work is different, and the emphasis on what to know is related to the work itself. See your Study Guide . Also come to class!
The ID part of the exam will be multiple choice, computer graded. You will need to supply your own BLUE SCANSHEET and PENCILS. LEARN THE INFO AS WE DISCUSS IT IN CLASS - don't leave it until the night before the test! Study together in groups. Make flash cards or other sorts of visual memory aids (of course, not to be used during the test!).

PART II: ESSAY (25 points)
DIRECTIONS: Below is the essay question for the third Midterm. You may NOT use any notes or outlines during the exam. We will provide the paper on which to write. See the STUDY GUIDE and your text , which should be helpful in organizing and thinking about your essay.
Following are the two works you will discuss in the essay below:
Fig. 23-18, North America, Northwest Coast, Reid, the Spirit of Haida Gwaii
Fig. 27-6, 19th C, Romanticism, France, Gericault, Raft of the 'Medusa'
1) For this exam, you will be asked to discuss BOTH works in an essay that compares and contrasts them. First, be able to identify the works (filling in the blanks - title, artist, culture/period, sub-period or country - 8 points). Spelling will count - if it's spelled wrong, it is wrong!
2) Then, in a well-written and well-organized essay, be able to discuss the two works in terms of the following statement:
Both of the images chosen are TRYING TO TELL A PARTICULAR STORY OR CONVEY A SPECIFIC MESSAGE. In each case, the artist is using a combination of symbolic and stylistic means to enhance the clarity and meaning of the work.
COMPARE AND CONTRAST THESE WORKS IN TERMS OF:
1) the particular story and/or message(s) each work is trying to convey (4 points, 2 points each)
2) the SYMBOLIC MEANS the artist employs in each work to enhance the story or message (6 points, 3 points each)
3) the STYLISTIC MEANS the artists have chosen to depict their works (6 points, 3 points each)
Remember to discuss BOTH slides and NOTE THE POINT VALUES.
