Genetics 301 Homework Assignment #12, Spring 2003

  1. Three bird populations have been studied for allozyme frequency and mitochondrial type, with the following results:
  2.

    Mitochondrial type

    Allozyme allele frequencies

    Mainland population

    A (1.0)

    C (1.0)

    B ( 0)

    C’ ( 0)

    Island 1

    A ( 0)

    C (0.5)

    B (1.0)

    C’ (0.5)

    Island 2

    A ( 0)

    C ( 0)

    B (1.0)

    C’ (1.0)

Island 2 is located farther from the mainland and Island 1 is located between Island 2 and the mainland. Some biologists believe that the population on Island 1 was founded by migration and mixing of the Island 2 and mainland populations. If this is true, how might this have occurred and still be consistent with the mitochondrial and allozyme results?

  3. What will the equilibriium frequency be for two alleles, with the selection coefficient being 0.09 against one homozygous genotype, and 0.01 against the other?

Also: Problems 13.1, 13.3 (identify which are exact fits to Hardy-Weinberg expectations)

13.5 (assume that the man in question is normal in phenotype), 14.1 and 14.3. (Also look at questions 14.6 and 14.8. Although these will not be on the quiz for week 15, they could be on the final exam).
