Genetics 301 Quiz #3
Spring 2003, Class week 3

  1. What is the map distance between the A and B genes, given the following phenotype numbers of progeny in a cross between AB/ab females and ab/ab males? (5 pts.)
  2. AB 409

    ab 391

    aB 102

    Ab 98

    TOTAL 1000

    Recombinant progeny = 200/1000 = 20% crossover types = 20 cM

  3. Determine the order of the genes D, E and F on the chromosome, given the following data (1 pt.). (Note: The order may not necessarily have E in the middle).

E is in the middle in this case. This can be shown by calculating the pairwise map distances and also because the Dco classes differ from the parental classes by E.

Also determine the map distances between the genes (D to E, D to F, E to F) (1 pt. each).

D to E is (65 + 75 + 6 + 4) / 1000 = 150/1000 = 15 cM

E to F is (47 + 43 + 6 + 4) / 1000 = 100/ 1000 = 10 cM

D to F (the outside markers) is most accurately calculated by summing the two distances above, 10 + 15 = 25 cM

What is the value for the coefficient of coincidence? (1 pt.)

C = 10 observed DCOs / 15 expected = 2/3 or .67

15 expected is calculated as (.15)(.10)(1000) = 15
