Campus Lodging: The Salve Regina dormitories are recently renovated and do offer air-conditioning and private baths. Linens are provided. However, you should keep in mind that these are dorm rooms. Translation: no decoration; single beds; mattresses about 4" thick; no box springs. (Remember the old English Institute days when everyone stayed in the Longfellow Graduate Center?) All prices include a continental breakfast. Alternatively, a full breakfast for an additional charge is available in the campus cafeteria, about a five-minute walk.
Off-Campus Lodging: Newport is chock-full of lovely B&Bs, hotels, and motels, and you may visit the Newport Convention Center web site (www.gonewport.com) for a full range of ideas.
We have arranged for conference rates at three diverse places. When you call, ask for the "Edith Wharton Society Conference rate." Note: the conference rate expires 30 days prior to the conference and all rooms are filled on a first-come, first-served basis, so book early.
The Victorian Ladies Inn. A very nice B&B. (Salve Regina often houses visitors here.) It fronts on Memorial Blvd. but is very quiet inside. One could walk to the conference site in about 10 minutes. The proprietress, Helen O'Neill, is wonderful. She has a very limited number of rooms available (8 or fewer) and will offer you a conference rate of $135/night per room (all rooms have one queen bed), if you stay four nights. Full breakfast included. Contact: Victorian Ladies Inn, 63 Memorial Boulevard, Newport, RI 02840. Phone: 401-849-9960. Email: info@victorianladies.com. Web site: www.victorianladies.com.
Best Western Mainstay. This is a largish (168 room) motel-style facility (rooms open to the outdoors). It is about 3 miles from the conference site (taxi fare less than $5.00). The rate per room is very good (averages $100/night if you stay four nights) though it does not include breakfast. There is a coffee shop on site for the morning meal, however. Contact: Best Western Mainstay (Judy O'Connell, manager), 151 Admiral Kalbfus Road, Newport, RI 02840. Phone: 401-849-9880 or 800-849-9880. Fax: 401-849-4391. Visit the Best Western web site (www.bestwestern.com) for more information and a photo of the site.
Best Western Atlantic Beach. This is part hotel-/part motel-like in that some rooms open onto a hall while others open to the outside. All rooms are small suites (king bed/ queen sofabed in the living room). The facility is located right across from Easton's Beach. One can walk to the conference site in about twenty minutes, taking the Cliff Walk all the way. Taxi fare about $3 to $5. The rate per room is $150/night and includes a basic continental breakfast set up on a table in the lobby. Contact: Best Western Atlantic Beach Hotel, 34 Wave Ave., Middletown, RI, 02840. Phone: 401-847-5330. Fax: 401-847-8041. Visit the Best Western web site (www.bestwestern.com) for more information and a photo of the site.
