CALL FOR PAPERS:

Special Session-- Major American Authors: Edith Wharton
New Approaches to Wharton's Life and Art
Central New York Conference on Language and Literature
held at SUNY Cortland (Cortland, NY)
October 3 - 5, 1999

This approved special session welcomes new approaches to the study of
Wharton's life and art. Possible topics might include (but are not limited
to):

Wharton's relation to late 19th-/early 20th-century American women writers

New approaches to the literary friendship between Wharton and Henry James
Wharton's short stories, particularly her ghost stories
Wharton's relationship with the visual arts
Wharton's lesser-known titles (e.g., _The Touchstone_, _The Reef_, _The
Mother's Recompense_, _Twilight Sleep_)
Wharton and France
Wharton's connection to feminism
Wharton and the writers of the "Jazz Age"
Please send 250-word abstracts and a brief bio (one paragraph) to the chair
