PPP 2011 Copenhagen

After a very successful first meeting in Copenhagen in October 2011, we decided to organize a second PPP meeting. The meeting will take place in the honors lounge at Washington State University in Pullman (WA). Central element will be a discussion of our current understanding of phloem loading, transport, and unloading, with a focus on the underlying biological and physical priniples. Participants include Physicists, Bioengineers, Cell Biologists, Physiologists, Ecologists, Molecular Biologists etc. Our final aim is to identify the most significant questions that need to be answered in order to understand assimilate distribution within plants, and to start interdisciplinary collaborations to answer those questions.  Since basically all food has at some point been translocated throgh the phloem, since major crop losses are due to pests feeding on the phloem or using it to spead through the plant, since long distance signal transmission takes place in the phloem etc. we belief it is time to figure out the basic principles of phloem transport in order to generate new strategies for crop protection. If you are interested to join the meeting, please send an email to knoblauch@wsu.edu.
